Entry Requirements Checker

Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area but is not a member of the European Union. Entry rules follow the Schengen framework: travelers from visa-exempt countries can generally stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa, while other nationalities need a Schengen visa before departure.

Good to know

  • A machine-readable or biometric passport valid for at least three months beyond your departure date is required.
  • The 90-day limit applies across the entire Schengen Area combined, not per country, so time spent in France or elsewhere in Schengen counts too.
  • The French border near Geneva is open with no systematic checks, but it remains a customs border: declared purchases and duty limits still apply when crossing.
  • A Schengen visa or ETIAS authorization covers Switzerland and all other Schengen countries on the same trip.
  • Entry is always decided by a Swiss border officer on arrival, even with a valid visa or ETIAS authorization.

Entry requirements can change, and ETIAS implementation dates have shifted before. Always confirm the current rules on the official Swiss State Secretariat for Migration or EU ETIAS websites before booking. sem.admin.ch · travel-europe.europa.eu
