Things to do in Gruyères

Gruyères is a fortified medieval village in canton Fribourg, not the historic cheese itself and not in France — about 1h30 to 1h45 from Geneva by car or train, usually changing at Fribourg or Bulle. The village is small and car-free at its centre: a single cobbled street leading up to the castle, walkable in under an hour.

Most visitors pair it with La Maison du Gruyère, the cheese dairy on the edge of the village, and often with Maison Cailler, the Nestlé chocolate visitor centre a few minutes away in Broc. A half-day covers the village alone; fitting in the castle plus one or two of the food visits, with the return trip, makes a full day.

All admissions are separate, paid tickets in Swiss francs, with service included by law.
